The Rocky Horror Picture Show live is an Audience Participation experience – meaning you have a chance to be a part of the action! Many of our audience members dress like the characters (or just like a slut, which we’ll never discourage!), shout at the movie, dance in the aisles, and throw props to be part of the show. You’re as important to our success each week as we are, so be ready to be join the party!
Callbacks
Audience participation is crucial to the Rocky Horror experience. This means that at different points during the film, we’re counting on you to shout lines, dance, use props, and possibly even (gasp!) interact with a cast member. You will often hear other audience members shouting out witty responses to the action and dialog on screen. These callbacks are a constantly-evolving dialog between the audience and the movie. If you think of something funny, timely, and relevant to the action on screen just scream it out – and see your fellow movie-goers react.
If you have never seen the show before, here are a few simple ones to get you started:
- Call Brad an “Asshole” whenever he introduces himself, or when the Criminologist says his name.
- Call Janet a “Slut” when she is introduced, or when the Criminologist mentions her.
- For additional ideas (though we strongly encourage you to make them your own), check out the text files on Rockypedia.
Prop Kits
To help you out, we sell Prop Kits (or, as we like to call them, Survival Kits). They’ll help you be part of the show – why just shout obnoxious callbacks when you can throw things, too?!?
You can purchase Prop Kits before the show at our handy dandy Prop Kits Table (see photo), or, if you’re late to the party, you can purchase them as far as 15 minutes INTO THE SHOW, so you don’t miss out on the full audience participation experience!
- Props Kits sell for $3.00 each, or you can get two (2) for $5.00!
- Just Five Bucks…what the fuck?!
Fun With Prop Kits
Here’s a list of what’s in the kits and when to use it. Remember to throw your items up, not at the stage and screen, which are expensive and breakable.
Newspaper: Janet puts a newspaper on her head to stay dry in the rain as she and Brad walk up to the castle. Put the newspaper over your head to protect yourself from imaginary rain. (Unfortunately squirt guns are not allowed due to expensive decorations on the wall of the theater. So you won’t actually get wet – but it’s fun to pretend, anyway!)
Glow stick: Wave your glowstick during “There’s a Light.” Remember to hide your glowstick when Brad and Janet sing “in the darkness.”
Rubber Glove: Frank N Furter puts on rubber gloves before creating Rocky Horror in his lab. Frank snaps his; you snap yours.
Noise Maker: The Transylvanians are quite impressed with Frank N Furter’s creation when Rocky is revealed – and who wouldn’t be?! They make lots of noise for him – Make some noise as well.
Confetti: When celebrating Rocky’s birth (and imminent deflowering), the Transylvanians make lots of noise and throw confetti. It makes a big mess and everyone loves it. Our kits come with party poppers, which shoot confetti streamers across the theater and make noise, too. Hurray! (Some people like to pop their poppers when Frank pops Janet’s cherry. That’s fine, too.)
Scott Toilet Paper: When Dr. Scott comes busting through the wall, Brad shouts “Great Scott!” To celebrate Dr. Scott’s arrival, throw your toilet paper (and make sure it unrolls when you do!); it does the bottom good.
Toast: During dinner, Frank proposes a toast (“To Cannibalism!”) to Rocky Horror. Throw some toast up in the air. Word of Warning: Don’t eat the toast!
Party Hat: It is Rocky’s birthday and Rocky Horror is a big party. The Transylvanians wear party hats, and Frank wears one during dinner scene: you can wear one as well.
Cards: Frank sings about “cards for sorrow, cards for pain” during “I’m Going Home”. Throw some cards in the air for him. You can see the sorrow, you can feel the pain. Show him you understand, and throw a few cards for him, too!
